Step 1 of 14 · Estate or trust and return period

File Form 1041 — U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts

Report a decedent's estate's or a trust's income, deductions and tax for the year: the income and deductions on page 1, the charitable deduction (Schedule A), the income distribution deduction (Schedule B) with a Schedule K-1 for each beneficiary, the tax and payments (Schedule G), and the schedules and forms the return carries. Totals and the lines that copy from another part are worked out for you.

$25 flat. A person reviews and files every return.

IRS e-file approval for Form 1041 is in progress: we prepare your return now, hold it, and transmit it the moment we are cleared. Totals, differences and the lines that copy from another part are worked out for you and shown read-only; everything else is what your books say. The return is 14 pages; Continue checks each one, and you sign on the last.

Estate or trust

As it appears on the return. For a grantor type trust, see the Form 1041 instructions.

Up to four letters. The IRS keys a trust on the first four letters of the surname of the person it is named for, or of the first word of a business name; blank, the business rule is applied.

A P.O. box only if mail is not delivered to the street address. Room or suite goes in the next box; the IRS reads it all as one line.

Fiduciary

The executor, administrator or trustee who signs the return — a person, or a bank or trust company acting as corporate fiduciary.

An individual acting as fiduciary leaves the EIN space blank; the SSN is not required.
